Commissioner Gort and members of his staff assisted in this process by fostering reductions in excess of $4 million to the city’s General Fund and recommended adjusting the Community Development year by six months in order to receive funds in a timelier manner. The shortened year resulted in a $5 million gain for the City.

Knowing the hardships many families are facing in these tough economic times, Commissioner Willy Gort participated in several Back to School events distributing backpacks and school supplies to school kids to get them ready for the start of classes. Thousands of youngsters came to the events at Duarte Park, Stadium Apartments and Grapeland Park for a day filled with entertainment, food, career information, youth programs and mentoring.

Making sure 25 inner city kids from the Police Athletic League (PAL) Track and Field travelled to New Orleans to compete in the Junior Olympics Games, Commissioner Willy Gort rolled his sleeves in a fundraising Car Wash event to help make this group of youngsters dreams come true.

Long before Wifredo (Willy) Gort started his career as a City of Miami Commissioner, he was
already well known for his excellent community service and his volunteer work in what today
are important not- for- profit agencies offering social services to the elderly, the young and
the small business community, like Little Havana Nutrition and Activity Center, Youth Co-Op
and the Latin Chamber of Commerce (CAMACOL).
Wilfredo (Willy) Gort was elected as City of Miami Commissioner in the City-wide election on November 9, 1993. In 1996 Mr. Gort was selected Vice Mayor,
and served as acting mayor three months after the death of Mayor Stephen P. Clark.
Having worked on the 1994 – 1995 City Budget in collaboration with the city’s department directors and unions, Mr. Gort was able to reduce, city budget
by over $20 million. Mr. Gort worked closely with the City Neighborhood Enhancement System (NET), believing that this the best system to better serve
the community; indentifying each communities needs and addressing those needs to better each community and therefore strengthen the city community by
