THE PROJECT
The City of Miami, in coordination with the
Florida Department of Transportation, is
proposing to build the Miami Streetcar
Project from Government Center in Downtown
Miami through the Entertainment District,
Wynwood/Edgewater, Midtown Miami, the Miami
Design District, Overtown and the Civic
Center/Health District complex. The
streetcar is an urban transit circulator
that will operate in existing roadways, and
provide connectivity among major activity
centers, commercial and retail
establishments, as well as residential
communities throughout the project corridor.
The recommended Miami Streetcar route,
refined through community input, consists of
three operational loops:
- North-South Alignment runs from
Government Center at NW 1st Avenue to
Miami Design District at NE 40th Street.
- West-South Alignment runs from the
Civic Center/Health District along NE/NW
20th Street to Government Center at NW
1st Avenue.
- North-West Alignment runs from Miami
Design District at NE 40th Street to
Civic Center/Health District at NW 10th
Avenue.
THE PROCESS
The City of Miami Commission approved a
resolution on May 12, 2005, adopting the
“City of Miami Streetcar Corridor
Feasibility Study, Final Report, April 2005”,
and authorizing further studies with the
goal of implementing a transit circulator to
connect major activity centers and
neighborhoods in the downtown area.
Subsequently, the City’s Department of
Capital Improvements & Transportation began
the next phase of project development in
November, 2005. Environmental and
engineering studies, compiled in an
Alternatives Analysis Report in accordance
with the State of Florida transportation
planning process, were completed in Summer
and Fall 2006; resulting documents are
posted on this website, under “Technical
Reports, 2006” .
A concurrent Public Involvement Program
(PIP) was conducted; results of that program
are contained in the Public Involvement
Report, which may be viewed in the
“Technical Reports, 2006” folder. The
Alternatives Analysis Report addresses
technical issues, identifies potential
project impacts, and updates the project’s
cost estimates. Through the PIP, the City of
Miami has coordinated with regulatory and
permitting agencies, and has conducted
stakeholder meetings, community workshops
and other project update meetings with the
community since February, 2006.
A Public Hearing was held on October 18,
2006. Results of that public hearing may be
found in the Public Involvement Report. A
transcript of the evening’s proceedings and
a roster containing signatures of attendees
at the Hearing are also available on this
website.
