The Property and Casualty Unit is responsible for procuring insurance coverage for the City and its facilities including the evaluation of property and casualty insurance coverage requirements and the approval of all City contracts in conjunction with the City Attorney’s Office.

The Unit also reviews contract compliance with established levels of insurance requirements as specified in contracts and the overall procurement process. This serves to reduce the City’s exposure to liability claims and lawsuits arising from the activities and operations of independent contractors and vendors.

The City also carries an excess casualty policy for catastrophic losses for damages that go beyond those covered by the City’s Self-Insurance Program. The excess casualty policy responds to those exposures ranging from general liability, workers’ compensation, automobile coverage, employee benefits, and other related exposures contemplated in the self-insurance program. The primary purpose of the policy is to protect the City on claims that go beyond the limits of the sovereign immunity statute.
