(Miami, FL
June 14, 2011)With
the presence of City of Miami Commissioner Richard P. Dunn, II,
Miami Dade County Commissioner Audrey Edmonson, School Board Member,
District 2, Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindigall, Model City NET and
Little Haiti NET Administrator, von Carol Kinchens and members the
community, the City of Miami will be holding its
10thAnnual
JUNETEENTH Cultural Celebration, Friday, June 17th, 2011,
starting at 6:00pm, Charles Hadley Park, Black Box Theater, 1350 NW
50 Street.
JUNETEENTH is the oldest known celebration dating back to 1865 when
the slaves were freed and this is the true Independence Day for
African Americans. This years' theme is, "Persist: Hold Firmly,
Perseverance: Steadfastness, Preserver: Constant;
Be Yea
Steadfast and Unmovable into the Future." The event program will be
an evening of song and praise.
The slaves communicated through songs and the use of
spirituals where "hidden"
or "coded" messages were embedded in song lyrics.
I am proud to support the JUNETEENTH celebration because it
commemorates the delayed celebration of the emancipation
proclamation, expressed Commissioner Dunn.
The Model City N.E.T. is to be commended for recognizing the
momentous occasion which is prominent in the life and history of
most of the District 5 residents.
The event
is free and open to the public.
Reception starts at 6:00pm and the program at 7:30pm. For more
information, contact Model City NET Office at (305) 795-2303.
