  CITY OF MIAMI PARKS AND RECREATION 
RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARDS FOR PARKS AND RECREATION

 

Miami, FL – July 2011 - The City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department was recently selected to receive the National 2011 Excellence in Inclusion Award by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). Additionally, City of Miami Parks Director, Ernest Burkeen has been selected for the Park Resources Network 2011 Distinguished Professional Award. NRPA will present the awards publicly at a special reception at the association’s 2011 Congress & Exposition in Atlanta, Ga., on Nov. 2, 2011.

Each year, NRPA National Awards are presented to individuals and agencies across the U.S. to honor their efforts— both professional and personal—in the field of parks and recreation. Recipients are selected from a pool of applicants by NRPA’s National Forum Awards Committee, and are chosen for excellence in a variety of topics, including professional and voluntary service, programming, leadership, research and public outreach.

The Excellence in Inclusion Awards recognizes and honors an organization and program that has rendered significant service to the inclusion process. The awards highlight the efforts in providing inclusive opportunities to children, youth, and adults with disabilities. The City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department through the Sandra Delucca Developmental Center offers a comprehensive service roster for those with special needs. Project Search Miami was highlighted through the award application process for its innovative approach at providing job skills for teens about to graduate from high school with a special diploma.

The Distinguished Professional Award is presented to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the field through their leadership, research, advocacy, community outreach, and program development. Eligible candidates must have at least 15 years of experience in the field of parks and recreation. City of Miami Parks Director Ernest Burkeen is a 35 year career veteran in the field of recreation. With an active participation in State and National park associations, he is a currently serving on the Board of Regents for the National Recreation and Parks Association.

The City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for the program planning and maintenance of 110 parks. Parks staff are committed to offering residents diverse leisure opportunities that encourage their connection with the native environment and utilization of recreation tools for a healthier and active community.
