Happy 115th Birthday Miami…and Many More!

Come Join the Celebration Sunday, July 24, 2011, 10am – 8pm in Brickell

(Miami, FL   July 19, 2011)—The Magic City is turning 115 years young, and the City of Miami and DowntownMiami.com are joining forces again to prepare for the annual revelry, a day full of celebration, history and fun for the whole family. Every year, 100% of the proceeds go towards funding a local worthy cause and this year’s goal will be collecting funds for Bike Miami Days 2012, featuring a monthly Bike Miami Day from January – April 2012.  The City of Miami was incorporated in July 28, 1896 and is one of the few municipalities in the nation founded by women, William and Mary Brickell, and Julia Tuttle, known as the Mother of Miami.

On Sunday, July 24, Miami’s Anniversary celebration begins with a Bike Miami Days event, and cyclists can choose to participate in the Full Route, 10am – 2pm or the Condensed Route, 2pm – 8pm.  Children will have lots of fun too with arts and crafts, face painting, balloons and prizes, from 10am – 5pm, at the Mary Brickell Village Oceannaire Courtyard.  The Sunday Market, with arts and crafts, plants, jewelry, candles and artisanal and baked goods will extend its hours, in honor of Miami’s birthday, to 8pm.  Complimentary tours of the Brickell area will be hosted by the Urban Tour Host at 11am and 2pm.  And what is a party without great music and food? In true Miami style, there will be live entertainment, celebrity DJ’s and progressive food tastings from area restaurants all throughout the day for everyone to enjoy.

At 6pm, Mayor Tomas Regalado, elected officials and all present will gather to sing “Happy Birthday Miami,” at the Main Stage on South Miami Avenue and 9th St., and enjoy a complimentary cupcake from Miami’s 115 Birthday cake, a 2,500 guava and cream cheese cupcake masterpiece by LA Sweets.

For those wishing to take home a beautiful souvenir of the event, the Downtown Miami Residents and Visitors Center, Mary Brickell Village, Space #183, will be distributing “Miami 115” posters from 10am – 6pm. (While quantities last).  Artist Steve Gamson will be present from noon to 2pm for signings.
