(Miami, FL
November 30, 2011)--
On Friday, December 2, 2011
participants from the Sandra Delucca Developmental Center, along
with Commission Chairman Wifredo “Willy” Gort, will be at the
Melreese Golf
Course, 1800 NW 37 Avenue,
at 10:00 am, to welcome golfers to the
21st Annual Golf
Classic which raises money for those with special needs. At
first glance both the participants and golfers may not warrant a
second look, but for those who do, they will have the opportunity to
witness some of the biggest names in baseball and football mingling
with those from the Miami community who are living with a disability
such as Autism, Down’s syndrome and Cerebral Palsy. With the
simple gesture of signing up to tee-off on the green, sports legends
like Lawrence Taylor,
Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez, Erik Compton, Glen Rice, Juan Pablo
Montoya and Livan Hernandez will be participating in the
tournament to raise the funds needed to provide a summer camp
experience for teens with special needs. Called City of Miami Camp
Shriver, an inclusive camp with a focus on sports, friendship and
opening doors to opportunities, the number of weeks the camp will
run is determined by the amount of money raised by the tournament. “I want to
express my gratitude to all the sports stars and the people from the
community who every year make this event possible,” commented
Commissioner Willy Gort.
“The money raised goes to a very worthy cause by helping the
De Lucca Developmental Center continue to provide the training and
meaningful experiences which forever change the lives of these
individuals with special needs.” Through
volunteers and advocates for the Sandra Delucca Development Center
like Charlie Delucca Sr. from the Dade Amateur Golf Association and
First Tee of Miami, the golf tournament is an annual event which
brings together a diverse crowd of golfers who all want to make a
difference. Thanks to the support from individuals like Blake Burman
from WSVN, who will be the master of ceremonies for the event, it is
evident that those with special needs do hold a special place in the
hearts of the Miami community. The Sandra
Delucca Developmental Center runs multiple programs for Miami’s
special population. GET FIT offers recreation sport participation
which allows for training for Special Olympic competitions. ADT
provides life skill training, Project SEARCH Miami provides on the
job training for teens in their final year of high school before
attaining their special diploma so that they can go on to apply for
jobs with valid work experience on their resume. As the
holiday season approaches, the Annual Golf Classic is a great
example of the holiday spirit at work. Every dollar raised will
directly make a difference in the life of a person with special
needs. For more information
