Mayor Tomas Regalado and Commission Chairman Wifredo (Willy) Gort Dedicate NW 24th Avenue & 20th Street

“Rafael Cabezas Fundora Way”

  (Miami, FL April 8, 2011)—City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and Commission Chairman Wifredo (Willy) Gort, District 1, along with members of Allapattah Community Action, Allapattah Business Development Authority (ABDA), the Allapattah business community and the Association of the Veterans of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, city officials, family and friends, will celebrate a street co-designation event on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at 10:00am, to name 24th Avenue NW & 20th Street “Rafael Cabezas Fundora Way” in honor of an outstanding citizen: Allapattah business and community leader, Rafael Cabezas.

For many years, Rafael Cabezas, along with Orlando Urra, were the motors that helped flourish the Allapattah business district through economic development and assistance to small businesses, helping in the renaissance of what has become one of the Miami’s best known shopping destinations, 20th Street NW. Rafael was a founder of Allapattah Community Action, a social services agency providing to the elderly and children, and Allapattah Business Development Authority (ABDA) administering economic development and housing projects in the Allapattah area. For their many years of dedication and joint effort to raise the quality of life in Allapattah, their streets will forever meet at the corner of 24th Ave. NW (Rafael Cabezas Fundora Way) and 20th Street NW (Orlando Urra Boulevard of the Americas).

A firm believer in human rights and democracy, Rafael joined the 2506 Assault Brigade that fought in Cuba in the Bay of Pigs Invasion. Later he was chosen by his peers as President of the Association of Veterans of the Bay of Pigs Invasion.

Commissioner Willy Gort expressed, “Rafael Cabezas will be remembered because of his work on behalf of merchants and businesses, children and the elderly in the Allapattah neighborhood, and his commitment to continually improve this community he loved to serve.”
