City of Miami Celebrates Arbor Day By Planting Trees Throughout West Flagler Neighborhood

-Mayor Tomas Regalado and Commissioner Francis Suarez Host Green Miami Campaign- b

(Miami, FL April 18, 2011)- In honor of National Arbor Day, Mayor Tomas Regalado and District 4 Commissioner Francis Suarez, joined by members of Miami’s Consular Corps will kick-off the celebration with a tree planting ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on April 29, 2011. The event will take place behind St Michael's Catholic Church located at 2987 West Flagler Street in Miami.

One-hundred trees will be planted within a five-block radius in the West Flagler residential area. Local volunteer organizations Citizens for a Better South Florida and Hands on Miami have partnered with the City in this initiative. Representatives will be present along with volunteers to plant 100 Florida native, drought-tolerant and wind resistant trees. Funding for the event is being provided by The Home Depot Foundation.

Established over 100 years ago, Arbor Day celebrates and promotes the planting and care of trees. Through the Tree Master Plan, adopted by the Miami City Commission in 2007, the City of Miami has set a goal of increasing its tree canopy to 30% by 2020. To accomplish this, the City has implemented the “Green Miami Campaign” which encourages neighborhood groups and individuals to plant and preserve the urban canopy.
