Mayor Tomas Regalado Commemorates the “Day of the Venezuelan in Exile” With Members and Organizations of the Venezuelan Community



   (Miami, FL April 13, 2011)—City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado will join members and organizations of the Venezuelan community in Miami to recognize, today, April 13, 2011 as the “Day of the Venezuelan in Exile.” The ceremony will take place at 2:00pm at Miami City Hall, 3500 Pan American Drive. Among the announced guests are Maria Corina Machado, member of Venezuela’s Congress and Luis Velazquez, President of the Metropolitan Town Council of the High Mayoral Office in Venezuela.

For the first time, The Order of Venezuelan Exile “Romulo Betancourt,” in honor of the former president considered the “Father of Venezuelan Democracy,” will be presented. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Venezuelan journalist and radio personality, Ivan Ballesteros will be the recipients of this honor for their unwavering support of the democratic principles and human rights in Venezuela. Local television and radio personalities, Venezuelan community activists and organizations making up VEPPEX (Politically Persecuted Venezuelans in Exile) will be recognized for their continued support of Venezuela’s struggle to return to democracy and keeping the avenues of communication open within the Venezuelan exile.

“The plight of the Venezuelan people is one shared by many freedom loving residents in the City of Miami,” said Mayor Regalado. “On this day we want to let them know that they are not alone, that we support their cause.”

Helena Poleo, journalist, Dr. Gisela Parra, Ex-President of the Judicial Council, Kenedy Bolivar, attorney and labor union leader, Jose Colina, President of VEPPEX will receive the proclamation from Mayor Regalado on behalf of the Venezuelan exile community.
