City of Miami to Receive Massive Sculpture by Renowned Artist

Miami, FL (October 28, 2010 ) —Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado will announce the arrival of ‘Flora la recogedora de Sueños”, a massive twenty-foot sculpture commissioned by Cundo Bermudez, during a press conference at City Hall, on Friday, October 29, 2010, at 10:00a.m.

Bermudez, who passed away in 2008, remained a prolific artist well into his 90s. He was born in Havana, Cuba in 1914 and is considered a master of Cuban art. His commissions for public places include a glass mosaic mural for the Havana Hilton Hotel, two 20-story-tall murals for the Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico and a monumental tile mural for the interior courtyard of the Organization of American States (O.A.S.) in Washington, D.C..

He also designed a spectacular 28-by-40 foot glass mosaic tile mural for the lobby of the Studio Theater at the Dolores and Sanford Ziff Ballet Opera House of the Performing Arts Center in the City of Miami. His work is also found in numerous public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Museo de Bellas Artes, Havana.

Bermudez made history in 1944 when his work was included in the “Modern Cuban Painting” exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the first exhibition of modern Cuban art outside Havana.
