Commissioner Dunn Joins Officials to Break Ground on New Affordable Housing in Overtown

Commissioner Richard P. Dunn Joined officials from the City of Miami, Miami-Dade County and the Carlisle Development Group to break ground on a new affordable housing project in Overtown. The Beacon Apartments , located at 1000 NW 1st Avenue will feature 90 rental apartments with amenities such as a library, computer lab, excise room and community center. A family of four earning between $17,226 and $31,320 a year would be eligible. The Beacon Apartments are scheduled to open in 2011.For more information on the Beacon Apartments, please contact the Carlisle Development Group at 305-476-8118. Dunn II has enacted an ordinance to enforce a Teen Curfew in the City of Miami that requires youth 17 and under to be off the streets without parents supervision after 11:00p.m. on weeknights and after midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Commissioner Dunn helped celebrate the official groundbreaking of Madison View, a new, affordable rental building under construction in Overtown at 642 NW 5th Avenue. Once completed ,Madison View will feature 120 one-, two-, and three-bedroom rental apartments for low-income persons who qualify at 60 percent of the area median income (AMI) or below. Madison View is receiving $3,150,500 million in HOME funding from the City of Miami and approximately $2.7 million in Surtax Funds from Miami-Dade County.

Commissioner Dunn and Mayor Regalado welcomed the Battle family into their new home at a recent ribbon cutting ceremony in Model City. This home is one of the newest affordable, green homes in the City. This three bedroom/ two bath home was made possible with public subsidies; and was built on a parcel conveyed by the City’s Department of Community Development. Additionally, the City provided mortgage assistance via the City’s First Time Homebuyer Program and a Green Mortgage from the Housing Finance Authority.

City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and Commissioner Dunn welcomed the U.S French Ambassador, Pierre Vimont to the Little Haiti Cultural Center to launch “French Heritage Miami.” “French Heritage Miami” is a series of creative and educational workshops in French that will be held at the center in March. The courses are open to students that are between the ages of7 to 15-years-old; their parents may attend as well.
